On Sunday November 3rd 2019 we were lucky enough to persuade Martin Roscoe to play a recital in St Alkmund's Church in the historic centre of town. He is a performer at the very top of his game. He has recently completed recording the entire 32 piano sonatas written by Beethoven, plus 3 other sonatas not usually included. We were very grateful to Martin for the helpful advice and support he had generously offered to one of our young international pianists.
The programme included Beethoven's Appassionata Sonata which Martin played superbly on the Kawai baby grand in the church. I am not convinced that the baby grand has ever completely recovered. Martin is a superb interpreter of Beethoven. The recital continued with a sublime account of Chopin's Nocturne No.8, his Polonaise No.6 and the Barcarolle. Martin also played pieces by Schumann and Debussy. To conclude his recital he played the haunting "Farewell to Stromness" by Peter Maxwell Davies. Martin's performance was one of those recitals that will stay with us till the day we die.
